She had been diagnosed with cancer of the breast in 1989. Handler's father is Jewish as was her mother. She raised to Reform Judaism. Handler had a happy and healthy childhood being raised in a wealthy neighborhood. At the age of 19 Handler made the move to Los Angeles, California to explore a career in acting. Handler began her career as an actress in order in order to help her. Handler made the decision to concentrate on stand-up at the age of 21 after she realized her storytelling skills. Handler started her stand-up career on the Oxygen Network's Girls Behaving Poorly, a reality show with an in-camera hidden camera and a practical joke. It ran between 2002 and 2005. Handler worked on many other shows like Weekends at D.L. The Bernie Mac Show My Wife and Kids, The Practice as well as Weekends at D.L. Handler began her professional career as a reporter on The Tonight Show. Handler got her first major break in the form of hosting her own E! Show in 2006. called The Chelsea Handler show. The show lasted during two consecutive seasons. In the following year, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend and HBO have aired her stand-up shows. In 2010 it was announced that the MTV Video Music Awards 2010 were made public. She became only the second woman to ever host VMAs following Roseanne Bar.
